Akkad

Sargon

//////////////////////

The Akkadian Empire

Sargon of Akkad gradually conquered the area between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers around 2300 BC. The Akkadians spoke a Semitic language, like theAmorites. Sargon, according to Sumerian literature, was born to an Akkadian high priestess and a poor father, maybe a gardener. His mother abandoned him by putting him in a basket woven out of reeds and letting it float away down the river (like Moses a thousand years later). But Sargon was rescued, made friends with the goddess Ishtar, and was brought up in the king's court.  When Sargon grew up, he built When West Asian smiths first began to make bronze, about 3500 BC, it was very expensive. Mostly people used bronze for weapons and armor. You could make a much better sword out of bronze than out of stone or wood. Bronze swords were lighter and sharper. Still, they weren't strong enough to cut with the side of the blade: you had to use bronze swords mainly to stab people, or your sword would break. Bronze armor was stronger and lighter than the leatherand wood armor soldiers had worn before. Everybody wanted it for war. By 3000 BC, Central Asians andHarappans in India were using bronze. Around 2000 BCIndo-Europeans spread the use of bronze to Europe and China. The Hyksos encouraged Africans in Egypt and Sudan to use more bronze around 1700 BC.   But soon Chinese and West Asianartists also began to use bronze to make bronze statues. As with the weapons, bronze is lighter than stone, and you can make statues in different poses with bronze than you can with stone. To get these bronze statues, the artists invented lost-wax casting.
By 900 AD, Ife and Hausa people inWest Africa were also using bronze alongside of iron. But after that, when new people in the Caribbean or thePueblos or Brazil learned how to work metal, they went straight to using iron, and nobody used much bronze anymore.
When bronze gets old, and the air touches it, itcorrodes (like iron rusting) and turns green, like these Etruscangreaves (leg armor). Once bronze got old and corroded, people usually sold it to a bronze-smith to melt down and recycle into new bronze things - that's why we don't have very much ancient bronze

SUMER

Sometime around 4000 B.C., ancient Sumerian culture emerged on a sun-scorched floodplain along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now southern Iraq. These enigmatic Mesopotamians are best known for inventing cuneiform script—the world’s oldest extant writing system—but they also forged a vibrant religious and literary tradition and made massive leaps forward in government, mathematics, urban planning and agriculture. Here are nine fascinating facts about one of the earliest sophisticated civilizations known to history.

One of the greatest sources of information on ancient Mesopotamia is the so-called “King List,” a clay tablet that documents the names of most of the ancient rulers of Sumer as well as the lengths of their reigns. The list is a strange blend of historical fact and myth—one early king is said to have lived for 43,200 years—but it also includes Sumer’s lone female monarch in the form of Kubaba, a “woman tavern-keeper” who supposedly took the throne in the city-state of Kish sometime around 2500 B.C. Very little is known about Kubaba’s reign or how she came to power, but the list credits her with making “firm the foundations of Kish” and forging a dynasty that lasted 100 years.

Even though they shared a common language and cultural traditions, the Sumerian city-states engaged in near-constant wars that resulted in several different dynasties and kingships. The first of these conflicts known to history concerns King Eannatum of Lagash, who defeated the rival city-state of Umma in a border dispute sometime around 2450 B.C. To commemorate his victory, Eannatum constructed the so-called “Stele of the Vultures,” a grisly limestone monument that depicts birds feasting on the flesh of his fallen enemies. Under Eannatum, Lagash went on to conquer the whole of Sumer, but it was just one of several city-states that held sway over Mesopotamia during its history.
The infighting led to several military advancements—the Sumerians may have invented the phalanx formation and siege warfare—but it also left them vulnerable to invasions by outside forces. During the latter stages of their history, they were attacked or conquered by the Elamites, Akkadians and Gutians

Girgashites

Girgashites

There is little known about the Girgashites. They are supposed to have dwelt near the Sea of Chinneroth (Galilee). The Girgashites descended from Canaan, the fourth son of Ham, the son of Noah. The name of Canaan's fourth son was Gergesus, according to Josephus. Canaan was cursed by Noah, and this curse passed onto his sons. Moses gave the command that the Girgashites were to be utterly destroyed.
Deuteronomy 7:1-2 - When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you; and when the LORD your God delivers them up before you, and you strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them;
The Girgashites were one of the seven nations that God commanded to utterly destroy. They were indeed driven out by the conquering Israelites, and not much is known about them.

The religion of the ancient Canaanites was idolatrous. They made their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Moloch, and they worshipped Baal and Ashtaroth, which included temple prostitution.

Scriptures
Deuteronomy 7:1 - When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

Nehemiah 9:8 - And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give [it, I say], to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou [art] righteous:

Joshua 24:11 - And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.

Joshua 3:10 - And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God [is] among you, and [that] he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

Genesis 15:21 - And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

Perizzites

The Perizzites occupied the southern area in the land of Canaan in the portion given to Judah, Simeon and the sons of Joseph.
Deuteronomy 7:1-2 - When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you; and when the LORD your God delivers them up before you, and you strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them;
The Perizzites were one of the seven nations that God commanded to utterly destroy. They were indeed driven out by the conquering Israelites, yet Israel failed to destroy them completely.
Judges 3:5-7- "The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. They took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods. The children of Israel did that which was evil in The LORD's sight, and forgot the LORD their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth.
The religion of the ancient Canaanites was idolatrous. They made their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Moloch, and they worshipped Baal and Ashtaroth, which included temple prostitution.

Hivites

Hivites

The Hivites (Hebrew "chivim" wicked) lived in the northern section of Canaan below Mount Hermon. They also inhabited Shechem during the time of Jacob. The Gibeonites who made a peace treaty with Joshua were Hivites. The main cities of the Hivites were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim. All of their cities were in the territory of Benjamin or near the border.
Joshua 11:3- to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the hill country, and the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
The Hivites descended from Canaan, the fourth son of Ham. Canaan was cursed by Noah, and this curse passed onto his sons. Moses gave the command that the Hivites were to be utterly destroyed.
Deuteronomy 7:1-2- When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you; and when the LORD your God delivers them up before you, and you strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them;
The Israelites conquered the Hivites but later the Hivites made friends with the Israelites. Solomon chose them to be servants in his Temple in Jerusalem (1 Kings 9:20-21).
The names of any Hivites are scarce and therefore it is difficult to know the language that they spoke, but it was no doubt similar to the other Canaanite tribes in the land and close to ancient Hebrew.
One of Esau's wives was a "daughter of Canaan", a daughter of Zibeon, the Hivite.

The religion of the ancient Canaanites was idolatrous. They made their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Moloch, and they worshipped Baal and Ashtaroth, which included temple prostitution.

Jebusites

Jebusites

Like the Amorites the Jebusites also dwelt in the Hill Country but they were in the area in and around Jerusalem, which was originally referred to as Jebus (trodden). The Hebrew word for Jebusite is "yebusi", and the Jebusites inhabited Jerusalem during the time of Joshua. Joshua was commanded to destroy the Jebusites along with all of the Canaanites in the land. The Jebusites descended from Jebus, the third son of Canaan, or Jebuseus according to Josephus. Canaan was the fourth son of Ham and was cursed by Noah, and this curse passed onto his sons.
Deuteronomy 7:1-2- When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you; and when the LORD your God delivers them up before you, and you strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them;
The Israelites burned Jerusalem (Judges 1:8), but the Jebusites regained it. Later David captured the city with some insightful military strategy from his general Joab who built a sort of underground water shaft. David made Jerusalem the new capital of his kingdom. (2 Samuel 5:6-10).

David bought the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite (2 Samuel 24:16-25), and later built the Temple on that location. Melchizedek was also from Jerusalem.

Archaeologists have confirmed that the original inhabitants of Jerusalem were Jebusites, and the corner of an Amorite wall from 1800 BC was used by the Jebusites in ancient times.

Hittites

Hittites

The Hittites (children of Heth) dwelt in the land of Canaan during the time of Abraham in the Hill Country around Hebron and in the south. The Hittites were numerous and powerful and became a threat to Egypt and even Assyria. There has been much light shed on the Hittite Nation through modern archaeology. The Hebrew word for Hittite was "Chittee" and they were referred to by the Egyptians as "Kheta" and by the Assyrians as "Hatti", and the Hittites referred to their empire as the Land of Hatti.
The Hittites were descendants of Heth, the Second Son of Canaan, the son of Ham. Canaan was cursed by Noah and therefore the sons of Canaan were also under the curse. After the Tower of Babel they settled in the mountainous areas of ancient Turkey (Anatolia) and northern Syria. During the time of Joshua there were Hittites living in the land of Canaan in the south near Hebron and west of the Dead Sea. Joshua defeated them but did not annihilate them:
Joshua 3:10- "By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite out from before you.
There is much debate regarding exact details about the Hittites, their history, the boundaries of their kingdom, their language, their racial origin and more.

Amorites

The Amorites lived in the Hill Country west of the Dead Sea. In Old Testament times they established 2 kingdoms east of the Jordan, which were Og king of Bashan, and Sihon king of Heshbon.

The Amorites were descendants of Emer, the Fourth Son of Canaan, the son of Ham. Canaan was cursed by Noah and therefore the sons of Canaan were also under the curse. After the Tower of Babel they settled in the area of the land of Canaan on the west of the Jordan River in the Hill Country, and also east of the Dead Sea and north of the Arnon River. They were known in the ancient world by the Akkadian "Amurru" which translation is still under speculation. Some think it to mean "The West" in relation to Mesopotamia. Others attribute their name to "Mountain Dweller" because their dwelling was in the mountains. The Amorites were descendants of Ham and very powerful, many of them were giants as it says in the Book of Amos:
Amos 2:9- Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
Moses conquered the Amorites and gave their territory to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh. Later Joshua defeated the Amorites on the west of the Jordan in the hill country. The land was allotted to the tribes of Judah, Simeon, Dan, and Benjamin.

Baal and Ashteroth
Baal was their chief god and his wife Ashteroth was their chief goddess. Her name in Chaldean was Ishtar, and in Greece and Rome she was Astarte. There religion involved temple prostitution, human sacrifice and orgies. There have been many temples, high places, stone pillars and altars excavated in the land of Israel. Some of the sites contained large numbers of containers with the remains of children who had been sacrificed to Baal.
